Gout, long considered a condition afflicting older adults, is now increasingly diagnosed in younger populations, according to a new global study. Researchers analyzing three decades of data found a notable rise in cases of the inflammatory arthritis among individuals aged 15 to 39, a trend expected to continue through 2035. The study, published in Joint Bone Spine, highlights a 62% increase in incidence for those under 40 between 1991 and 2021, with North American men aged 35-39 being most affected.

A recent study reveals a consistent rise in the inflammatory arthritis condition among individuals aged 15-39 since the 1990s, and this trend is expected to continue.

Gout often affects the big toe, causing inflammation of the joint.
IMAGO/DepositphotosGout is often considered a condition affecting older adults, but new research indicates a concerning trend: the inflammatory arthritis is increasingly diagnosed in younger people. A recent study found that the incidence of gout has risen significantly over the past three decades among individuals between the ages of 15 and 39. This shift in demographics highlights the importance of understanding risk factors and seeking early intervention.
Researchers in China analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease study, covering 204 countries over a 30-year period, to measure the prevalence and incidence of gout, as well as years lived with disability related to the condition. The results, published in the journal Joint Bone Spine, revealed a substantial increase in cases among younger adults.
American Men Show Highest Rates
Between 1991 and 2021, the incidence of gout increased by 62% in those under 40 years old, with prevalence and years of disability rising by 66%. The study identified men aged 35 to 39 living in high-income regions as being most affected, with North America showing the highest rates. Men also tend to experience longer durations of gout symptoms compared to women.
Researchers predict that the number of young adults affected by gout will continue to rise through 2035 due to global population growth.
Understanding Gout
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, often affecting the big toe. The joint becomes swollen, red, warm, and extremely tender. This condition is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.
These crystals form when there is an excess of uric acid in the blood, a waste product created when the body breaks down purines found in certain foods like red meat, shellfish, and some fish. Untreated gout can lead to joint deformities, kidney stones and potential kidney failure, and an increased risk of heart attack.
