Black holes, enigmatic and powerful cosmic entities, continue to captivate astronomers with their mysterious nature.these celestial giants form when massive stars exhaust their nuclear fuel and collapse under gravity, often resulting in a supernova explosion. The concept of black holes was first theorized by German astronomer Karl Schwarzschild and Indian-American physicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar as a outcome of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity.
by the 1970s, it became evident that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) reside at the centers of most large galaxies, playing a crucial role in their evolution. However,it wasn’t until recent years that we obtained the first images of these cosmic phenomena through the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT),challenging many preconceived notions about them.
Astronomical Breakthrough: Observing Unusual Black Hole Behavior
A groundbreaking study led by Megan Masterson from MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research has revealed unexpected behavior in an SMBH located in a neighboring galaxy. This research suggests that instead of tearing apart an orbiting white dwarf as predicted by existing models, the black hole appears to be slowing its descent—a phenomenon never observed before.
The team comprised researchers from various prestigious institutions including NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Their findings were presented at the 245th meeting of the american Astronomical Society held in January 2025.
The Role of XMM-Newton Observatory
Since 2011, NASA’s XMM-Newton observatory has been monitoring galaxy 1ES 1927+654, situated approximately 236 million light-years away in Draco constellation. In this galaxy lies an SMBH with a mass equivalent to 1.4 million Suns. Notably, this black hole exhibited unusual behavior starting in 2018 when its X-ray corona vanished unexpectedly followed by radio outbursts—phenomena known as Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO).

Anomalous Oscillations: A White Dwarf Encounter?
The observations between July 2022 and March 2024 revealed rapid fluctuations suggesting that a massive object was orbiting close to this SMBH while being gradually consumed—a likely candidate being a white dwarf star with about one-tenth solar mass traveling at speeds reaching half-light speed.
“We were shocked initially,” said Masterson regarding these findings but explained further how gravitational forces might strip matter off such companions halting inward motion due energy loss compensation via gravitational waves.”
