Fans of the iconic Egyptian singer Om Kalthoum will be able to experience her music anew today, April 2, 2026, as the El Sawy Cultural Wheel presents a performance featuring her beloved songs “Sira El Hob” (A Love Story) and “Haza Lailati” (This is My Night) at the El Sawy Cultural Center’s puppet theater.
The performance, which begins at 6:00 PM, is part of a monthly tradition that began in 2006, aiming to recreate the atmosphere of Om Kalthoum’s legendary concerts. The puppet theater display offers a unique way to revisit the perform of the singer, often referred to as “Kوكب الشرق” (The Star of the East), and is designed to appeal to audiences of all ages.
The El Sawy Cultural Wheel’s puppet theater, founded in 2005, has staged 18 marionette shows for both children and adults, focusing on educational entertainment and promoting values. In addition to Om Kalthoum, the theater has too presented performances celebrating other musical giants like Abdel Halim Hafez, Shadia, Farid Al Atrash, and Mohamed Abdel Wahab, as well as more contemporary artists like Mohamed Mounir.
Over the past seven years, the theater has expanded its repertoire to include tributes to international stars such as The Beatles, ABBA, and Louis Armstrong. The theater originally launched in 2006 with the puppet show “Al Masoura Al Kabeera” (The Big Pipe) by engineer Mohamed Abdel Moneim El Sawy.
A recent broadcast on April 2, 2026, featured a 1955 concert by Om Kalthoum on the Egyptian Radio’s Music Program, marking the first time the performance has been aired. This event further celebrates the enduring legacy of the singer, whose music continues to resonate with audiences across generations. Om Kalthoum’s influence on Arabic music and culture remains profound, and these performances ensure her artistry continues to be enjoyed by new audiences.
