Iran’s highest religious body has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s fresh Supreme Leader, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, on February 28. The appointment, made by the 88-member Assembly of Experts, came after a decisive vote by its representatives, with an overwhelming majority in favor, according to a statement released Sunday.
The move marks the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that power has been transferred from father to son in Iran’s highest office. This development is likely to spark debate within the country regarding the emergence of a hereditary system in a state founded on the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty’s hereditary rule, as reported by The Guardian.
Ali Khamenei, who led Iran for more than three decades, died at the age of 86. Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, now succeeds him as the nation’s top authority.
According to The Guardian, analysts view the appointment as a “symbolic” move demonstrating that the Iranian regime is not yielding to Western pressure.
Sources cited by Reuters indicate that Iran’s religious establishment views Mojtaba Khamenei as his father’s natural successor. However, the late Ali Khamenei had previously denied, in 2024, the possibility of transferring the position to a family member.
Prior to his death, Ali Khamenei reportedly named three potential successors – Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, head of the judiciary; his chief of staff, Ali-Asghar Khajavi; and Hassan Khomeini, grandson of Iran’s first Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini – but did not include his son, according to reports from the New York Times as cited by The Daily Mail.
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is considered a prominent figure within the Iranian religious establishment. He has been subject to U.S. Sanctions since 2019, accused of acting on behalf of his father in suppressing internal dissent.
The appointment comes amid heightened regional tensions, and U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the next Iranian Supreme Leader “won’t last long” without Washington’s approval.
Following the announcement, members of the religious body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority called on Iranians to rally around the new leader and maintain national unity. In a statement carried by state media, the Assembly of Experts described the selection as the result of a “decisive vote.”
Officials across Iran’s political and security apparatus quickly welcomed the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei. Ali Larijani, a prominent Iranian security official, stated that Mojtaba Khamenei is capable of leading the country during the current sensitive circumstances, urging unity around the new Supreme Leader. The leadership of the Iranian armed forces also pledged allegiance, while the parliament speaker described following Mojtaba Khamenei as a “religious and national duty.”
Born in 1969 in the city of Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the late Ali Khamenei. He studied religious sciences at the “Hawza of Qom.” From 1987 to 1988, he served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran-Iraq War. Reports have suggested he oversaw the Basij forces during the 2009 crackdown on anti-government protesters.
