Płock, Poland – A 14-year-old boy is facing legal consequences after flying a drone over a major Orlen industrial facility on Thursday, April 2, 2026, violating no-fly zone restrictions. The incident underscores the increasing require for vigilance regarding drone activity near critical infrastructure.

Police in Płock detained the teenager after receiving a report from the facility’s security team, according to reports from Wiadomości Onet and Gazeta.pl. The Orlen facility in Płock is one of the largest petrochemical plants in Poland and a key component of the country’s energy security, making unauthorized flights a serious concern.

Authorities stated the boy, who possessed a valid drone operator’s license, attempted to check flight availability in the restricted zone but disregarded necessary procedures due to application connectivity issues, o2.pl reported. He reportedly intended to film a vehicle from the air when the drone entered the prohibited airspace.

While the teenager had the required license to operate a drone, he will now appear in family court to address the ramifications of his actions. Police confirmed that violating airspace restrictions over strategic facilities can result in fines or other penalties. TVP3 Warszawa reported that the boy will face a hearing in family court.

The case highlights the challenges of enforcing drone regulations and ensuring the safety of critical infrastructure in an era of increasingly accessible drone technology.
