Jakarta, IDM – Two Indonesian Marine Corps soldiers were killed Sunday, March 22, in a firefight with an armed criminal group in the Maybrat region of Southwest Papua, officials said. The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in the remote and often volatile region of Indonesia.
The fallen soldiers were identified as Marine Sergeant Andi Suvio and Marine Private First Class Elki Saputra. According to Navy Information Service Head Rear Admiral Tunggul, both died whereas defending the country’s sovereignty.
The clash occurred after personnel from the Koops Habema Task Force completed a routine patrol in Sori Village, South Aifat District, Maybrat. Authorities believe the armed group had been monitoring the troops’ movements and launched a surprise ambush, triggering the gun battle.
One additional Marine, Corporal Eko Sutikno, sustained serious injuries during the exchange and is currently receiving intensive care.
A military ceremony honoring the two Marines was held Monday, March 23, at the 1st Marine Brigade in Cilandak, South Jakarta, led by Marine Corps Commander Lieutenant General Endi Supardi. The somber event was attended by numerous members of the Marine Corps.
“Our main focus is to provide the last honors deserving of these patriots and to ensure all rights of the deceased and their families are fulfilled,” Rear Admiral Tunggul stated.
The remains of Marine Sergeant Andi Suvio were transported to his hometown in Pangandaran Regency, West Java, for a military burial. Marine Private First Class Elki Saputra’s body was sent to Padang, West Sumatra, for a similar service.
“The departure of these two leaves a deep sorrow for the entire Marine Corps family, but also serves as an example of the spirit of dedication, courage, and loyalty of a soldier,” Tunggul added.
