A new book explores the surprisingly diverse world of restroom signage, alongside broader issues of public access and safety. Psychologist Marion Aufseesser’s collection of photographs, featured in To pee or not to pee, showcases the varied iconography used to indicate restrooms around the globe. The book, published by Editions Good Heidi Production and available in both French and English, offers a visual journey through global design choices.
Beyond the artistic and cultural aspects of restroom symbols, the work also touches on serious societal concerns. Philosopher Guila Clara Kessous examines the restroom as a space of respite and connection, but also acknowledges its potential as a site of threat for women. Meanwhile, Baudoin Luce, an expert in sanitation with the International Organization for Migration, highlights the global sanitation crisis, noting that 3.5 billion people still lack access to toilets and are therefore vulnerable to epidemics.
