A 52-year-old man whose life was disrupted by two decades of relentless hiccups has found relief through a targeted electrical stimulation therapy administered by Chinese doctors.
For 20 years, the man experienced a debilitating condition that significantly impacted his quality of life. As detailed in a case report published by Frontiers in Physiology, his hiccups initially occurred three times a week and lasted approximately 30 minutes.

However, beginning in August 2024, his condition worsened dramatically. The hiccups became a daily, persistent occurrence, even interrupting his sleep. This chronic condition was accompanied by severe acid reflux and vomiting, further diminishing his well-being. Persistent hiccups can be a sign of underlying medical issues, highlighting the importance of seeking medical attention for prolonged cases.
Electrical Stimulation Offers a Solution
After conventional treatments proved ineffective, doctors at Sichuan University’s hospital targeted the phrenic nerve. This crucial nerve connects the brain to the diaphragm, controlling the muscle responsible for breathing.
The treatment involved applying pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), a specific type of electrical current, directly to the nerve in the neck. The goal was to “reset” the erratic nerve signal causing the continuous diaphragm spasms.
Complete and Lasting Relief
The results were remarkable. Within weeks of the procedure, the frequency and intensity of the hiccups began to decrease. Three months after the operation, “the hiccups had completely disappeared,” ending two decades of suffering.
Although the exact causes of chronic hiccups often remain unclear—potentially linked to gastrointestinal, pulmonary, or neurological issues—this case demonstrates the potential of modern neurological therapies. Medical professionals emphasize that hiccups lasting longer than 48 hours warrant medical evaluation, as they could indicate a more serious underlying health problem.
