Han Han’s ‘Pegasus 3’ Set to Lead 2026 Chinese New Year Box Office
The highly anticipated third installment in director Han Han’s “Pegasus” film series, officially titled “Pegasus 3,” is confirmed to hit Chinese theaters during the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday, according to a statement released by Bona Film Group on February 10, 2026. The announcement marks the first major film to officially lock in a release date for what is expected to be the “longest-ever” Chinese New Year film festival.
Bona Film Group, a production company involved in the film, shared the news via an investor interaction platform. “The company participates in the production of the new film ‘Pegasus 3’ directed by Han Han, which has been scheduled to be released nationwide during the 2026 Spring Festival,” the statement read.
The “Pegasus” franchise has proven to be a consistent box office draw during the traditionally lucrative Chinese New Year period. The first film, released in 2019, grossed 1.728 billion yuan, while the second installment, “Pegasus 2,” landed as the second-highest-grossing film of the 2024 Spring Festival, earning a cumulative 3.361 billion yuan. Sohu reports that as of December 26, 2025, “Pegasus 3” remains the sole film officially slated for release during the holiday.
The 2026 Lunar New Year is set to be an extended holiday, lasting nine days, offering a potentially significant boost to the film market. Currently, seven films are confirmed for the holiday slate, with six scheduled to premiere on February 17, 2026. Sina reports that pre-sale box office numbers have already exceeded 100 million yuan, with “Pegasus 3” accounting for a third of that total and currently leading sales.
The announcement comes as the Chinese film industry anticipates a competitive holiday season. The longer holiday period is expected to draw larger audiences, but likewise increases the pressure on filmmakers to deliver compelling content. Eastmoney notes that the pre-sale figures indicate strong consumer interest in the upcoming films.
