Apple Plans iMac Refresh with New Colors, Potential Chip Updates
Apple is preparing to update its iMac line in 2026, with plans for a refreshed color palette and potential integration of either the M5 or M6 chip, according to recent reports. The move signals continued expansion of Apple’s product offerings as it navigates a competitive technology landscape.
While details remain limited, industry sources indicate the updated iMac will feature new color options, potentially attracting a wider consumer base. The company is also considering equipping the new iMac with either the M5 or M6 chip, building on the performance gains seen in its recent MacBook Pro releases. A new high-end MacBook, potentially called the “MacBook Ultra,” is also expected around the end of the year, and will feature the Mac’s first touchscreen and an OLED display, MacRumors reported.
Apple recently launched the M5 MacBook Air and M5 Pro/M5 Max MacBook Pro, and is preparing further Mac refreshes to complete its 2026 lineup. An upgraded Mac Studio is expected in the middle of the year, and new Mac mini models are also in development. The Mac Studio is likely to feature the M5 Max chip and either an M4 or M5 Ultra chip, while the Mac mini will probably offer M5 and M5 Pro variants.
The potential for an M6 chip in the iMac comes after Apple released the M4 iMac a year ago, which may set the expectation that Apple will update the iMac with every new chip generation. However, Apple has previously demonstrated flexibility in its update cycles, skipping the M2 chip for the 2021 M1 iMac and upgrading directly to the M3 model in 2023. Macworld notes that this precedent suggests a possible release at the end of 2026, coinciding with the expected debut of the M6 chip.
Beyond the iMac, Apple has several other products in the pipeline for 2026, including refreshed versions of the Apple TV and HomePod mini, as well as an all-new smart home display referred to as HomePad. The updated Apple TV 4K is expected to incorporate an A17 Pro chip, supporting Apple Intelligence. The company also plans to release a revamped iPad mini with OLED and A19 Pro in the fall.
