Utrecht, Netherlands – La Voie Bleue, a scenic cycle route stretching from the Luxembourg border to Lyon, France, has been named European Cycle Route of the Year 2026. The announcement came on February 13, 2026, at the Fiets en Wandelbeurs trade fair in Utrecht, Netherlands.
La Voie Bleue was selected from a pool of three finalists, competing against La Vélidéale in France and Ode Aan Het Landschap in the Netherlands. The route’s selection highlights a growing global interest in sustainable tourism and recreational cycling.
According to the jury, La Voie Bleue excels in several key areas, including clear signage, well-maintained surfaces, cyclist safety and the quality of the surrounding landscape. The route also offers numerous points of interest, cyclist-friendly facilities, and accessibility via public transportation.
What sets La Voie Bleue apart is its high percentage – 80% – of dedicated cycle paths, a figure notably higher than other French véloroutes. The route’s largely flat terrain also makes it suitable for families and cyclists of all ages and abilities. Cyclists can also grab advantage of readily available amenities such as water points, restrooms, bike shelters, and secure parking.
Spanning nearly 700 kilometers (approximately 435 miles), La Voie Bleue follows waterways including the Moselle, the Canal des Vosges, and the Saône River to its confluence with the Rhône. The route showcases France’s cultural heritage, passing through vibrant towns, picturesque villages, castles, vineyards, museums, and breathtaking scenery.
“This selection is a true mark of quality for the route and recognition of the investment made by local authorities,” officials stated. The award acknowledges the collaborative efforts to develop, secure, and provide services for cyclists along the entire route. Further details about the route and the award can be found online.
The 709-kilometer route is also a haven for wildlife, attracting diverse flora and fauna along its waterways, as noted by Komoot. The award is expected to boost tourism along the route and further promote cycling as a sustainable travel option.
