French Seniors Prioritize Independence Over Vaccination in Healthy Aging Efforts

A qualitative study presented at the Société Française de la Santé Publique (SFSP) congress, held from October 4 to 6, 2023, reveals a significant disconnect between how seniors perceive “well-aging” and the role of vaccination. The research suggests that while maintaining autonomy is a primary goal for the elderly, immunization is rarely viewed as a tool to achieve it.

The study, co-authored by Philippe Bergerot, President of the Ligue contre le cancer, along with Laura Leveque, Catherine Simonin and Quitterie Lanta, sought to identify the drivers and barriers to vaccination among seniors. This investigation is particularly timely given that vaccination rates for recommended vaccines in this population remain insufficient in France.

Between March and May 2022, researchers conducted 14 semi-directed interviews with individuals aged 65 and older living at home in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region. The participants emphasized a strong commitment to preserving their physical and cognitive capacities. To maintain their health and independence, they reported engaging in preventive behaviors such as maintaining a balanced diet and participating in regular physical activity.

But, the findings indicate that vaccination is not associated with the prevention of aging-related decline in the eyes of the participants. Despite their focus on preventive health, vaccination was not cited as a component of “well-aging” during the interviews.

These findings underscore ongoing public health challenges and suggest that current vaccination strategies may require to be reframed. By linking immunization directly to the preservation of autonomy—a high priority for the elderly—health officials may find more effective arguments to encourage vaccine uptake. The results could guide future public health strategies to better align medical recommendations with the personal values of seniors.
