While diagnoses of colorectal cancer have generally decreased since the 1980s, there has been a recent increase in cases among individuals under the age of 50. Recognizing the symptoms of this cancer is crucial for early detection and improved outcomes.

To help raise public awareness, Dr. Donald Grant, a general practitioner and senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has identified five symptoms that are often mistaken for other, less serious conditions.

1. Changes in Bowel Habits

Significant and persistent changes in bowel habits should not be ignored. Dr. Grant explained that these changes are frequently attributed to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), dietary factors, or hormonal fluctuations. But, they could also be an indicator of colorectal cancer.

“Anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, constipation, or a persistent feeling of incomplete evacuation after a bowel movement should consider consulting a doctor to rule out this potentially dangerous condition,” Dr. Grant said.

2. Blood in the Stool

The presence of blood in the stool is often associated with hemorrhoids or anal fissures. However, it can also be a sign of colorectal cancer.

“Generally, anyone who notices blood in their stool or experiences pain during bowel movements should seek medical attention, which can provide further advice on possible causes or testing for colorectal cancer,” Dr. Grant stated.

“Given the many potential causes, such as hemorrhoids or minor tears in the anus, it’s important to get it checked out by a doctor,” he added.

3. Bloating

Occasional bloating is a common experience. Dr. Grant acknowledged that determining the cause can sometimes be demanding.

This represents particularly true for women, as menstruation often causes bloating that can mask symptoms of other conditions.

“bloating can be caused by digestive issues, food intolerances, or IBS, but many are unaware that it can also be an indication of colorectal cancer,” Dr. Grant said.

Persistent and unexplained bloating should be investigated by a healthcare professional, as it could be a warning sign.

4. Persistent Fatigue

Fatigue is often dismissed as a result of overwork. However, Dr. Grant explained that colorectal cancer can lead to fatigue due to anemia, a condition caused by internal bleeding that limits the number of red blood cells in the body.

“This isn’t always obvious, as fatigue can be caused by a variety of factors – including lack of sleep, mental health issues, or a diet lacking essential nutrients. Medical conditions like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and diabetes can also cause fatigue, leading many to miss early identification of colorectal cancer, thus increasing their risk of mortality,” he explained.

5. Unexplained Weight Loss

Weight fluctuations can be attributed to changes in diet or exercise. However, Dr. Grant emphasized that unexplained weight loss should be taken very seriously.

“This can indicate a variety of dangerous health conditions, including hyperthyroidism, diabetes, tuberculosis, and, of course, colorectal cancer,” he said.

He added that if someone experiences rapid weight loss without changing their diet, increasing their exercise, or adjusting their lifestyle, they should seek medical attention for a more accurate diagnosis.

Given the number of symptoms that can be easily mistaken for other illnesses, Dr. Grant understands why people may struggle to identify colorectal cancer. Taking the time to understand the common signs of this condition is vital for proactive health management.

“Anyone who believes they may be experiencing the symptoms listed above should seek further analysis from a qualified general practitioner, who can provide tailored advice on possible diagnoses and treatment options,” he said.
