The upcoming *Resident evil Requiem*, slated for a February 27, 2026 release on PlayStation 5, is already generating discussion among fans due to the inclusion of a persistent “stalker” enemy-a hallmark of the franchise’s most intense and divisive moments. Capcom has confirmed this enemy is distinct from previous iterations like Lisa Trevor [[1]], [[2]], acknowledging the strong reactions these types of relentless adversaries evoke. Producer Masato Kumazawa has signaled a more moderate implementation of the stalker mechanic this time around, aiming for a balance between the franchise’s signature horror and player enjoyment [[3]].

Fans of the Resident Evil franchise are bracing themselves for a familiar, and often frustrating, challenge in the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem. The game, slated for release on February 27, 2026, will feature a relentless “stalker” enemy – a character designed to persistently pursue the player throughout a section of the game.

This design choice evokes strong reactions from players, as seen with previous installments like Resident Evil 2’s Tyrant, Resident Evil 3’s Nemesis, and Resident Evil 7’s Jack Baker. These enemies, and even characters like Lady Dimitrescu and the monstrous infant from Resident Evil Village, are known for their unwavering pursuit, creating a uniquely stressful gameplay experience. The inclusion of such enemies highlights the ongoing tension between delivering intense horror and maintaining player agency.

While some players thrive on the heightened tension, others find the experience overwhelmingly frustrating, particularly when lacking the means to effectively defend themselves. The feeling of helplessness can detract from enjoyment, even for dedicated fans of the series. This dynamic is common in survival horror games, where vulnerability is a core element, but the balance can be difficult to strike.

Fortunately, the game’s producer, Masato Kumazawa, acknowledges the divided opinions surrounding these types of enemies. In an interview with Well Played, Kumazawa stated:

“I completely understand that there are many, even completely opposing, opinions regarding stalker-type enemies, but at the end of the day, we are trying to deliver a survival horror experience. However, we have thoroughly learned how to be moderate with this mechanic. This time, it won’t be a central element of the game, but there will be a smaller section where such an enemy will be present.”

Kumazawa’s comments suggest that Resident Evil Requiem will attempt to address player concerns by limiting the stalker enemy’s presence. Players anticipating a challenging experience are already preparing for the game’s release, with some jokingly suggesting a need for calming tea. Despite the potential for stress, anticipation for Resident Evil Requiem remains high, and the game is expected to generate considerable discussion among fans.
