Despite a domestic treble last year, Barcelona is facing increasing scrutiny as they struggle to replicate their success on the European stage [[1]]. Recent turbulence, including a disappointing result against Chelsea and internal friction over young star lamine Yamal, highlights emerging cracks within Hansi Flick’s squad [[2]]. This report examines the factors contributing to Barcelona’s current challenges, from player performance and leadership concerns to missed opportunities in player recruitment, as the club aims to reaffirm its dominance in European football [[3]].

Barcelona’s hopes of reclaiming European glory are facing early-season turbulence following a disappointing result against Chelsea, adding to concerns about the team’s form after a domestic treble last year. Hansi Flick’s squad, fresh off winning La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa, fell short in the Champions League semifinals against Inter last season, and now find themselves struggling to find consistency.

Lamine Yamal visibly expressed his frustration when substituted by Hansi Flick in the 80th minute. The young star appeared agitated on the bench after being closely marked by Chelsea’s Cucurella – with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez joking that Cucurella “had him in his pocket” – and was even subjected to chants from the London crowd. “You’re just a shit Estevão,” they sang, a pointed comparison suggesting Yamal wasn’t living up to expectations.

The comparison to Estevão is significant, as both players are 18-year-old left-footed talents touted as future stars. Their paths crossed recently on the pitch, but could have converged earlier. In 2021, Barcelona scouts identified Estevão, then 14, as a potential world-class player and proposed a plan to bring him in for training sessions to pave the way for a future transfer. However, Barcelona didn’t follow through. Despite renewed interest under Deco, the club consistently cited financial constraints, declining offers including a recent bid of 30 million plus variables.

The situation was further complicated by the case of Vitor Roque. According to André Cury, who previously represented Barcelona in Brazil, the treatment of the forward damaged trust. Cury reportedly told the young Brazilian’s family, “We won’t go to Barcelona; look how they treat my players.” Roque ultimately signed with Chelsea for 45 million plus 20 million in variables, a deal Cury claims represented a five-year scouting effort ignored by Barcelona.

On Wednesday morning, the English press lauded Estevão’s performance, while simultaneously questioning Yamal’s impact. “Estevão eclipses Lamine Yamal and demonstrates why he is Chelsea’s rare diamond,” The Guardian published. The Times went even further: “Who is Lamine? Estevão dismantles Barcelona in an impressive night for Chelsea.”

Yamal’s leadership hasn’t materialized on the field. Without a clear captain in the squad – Lewandowski is focused on his own game and De Jong remains hesitant, while Araujo appears both lost and anxious – the 10 is shouldering too much responsibility for his age. Flick is aware of this and has shown some leniency, but some within the club believe it’s excessive. Others defend the approach, stating, “He needs to learn to manage his life and his game. He doesn’t seem like it, but he’s still a kid. We’re going to help him.”

However, managing Yamal isn’t Flick’s only challenge. The coach remains optimistic, stating, “We will see a better Barça in the future. The team is different than it was six weeks ago.” He believes the return of injured players – with only Gavi, Pedri, and Ter Stegen still sidelined – will improve training quality and on-field performance. Despite this, the pressure is mounting, and the defense has struggled, managing only one clean sheet in European competition this season, against Benfica last year.

Barcelona’s European calendar includes matches against Eintracht Frankfurt (December 9), Slavia Prague (January 21), and Copenhagen (January 28). Fortunately for Barcelona’s defense, they will only have to travel to the Czech Republic. A win in all three matches would secure 16 points in the Champions League group stage, likely enough to finish among the top eight.

But Barcelona appears far from dominating in Europe. And Yamal has stopped celebrating goals with his signature crown gesture, a tribute to his former partner, Nicki Nicole. The Chelsea faithful made sure to remind the young star who was in charge at Stamford Bridge.
