  • Three dogs were stolen in front of a Coop supermarket in Glattpark.
  • A dachshund named Max was discovered by a resident. The thief dropped the leash and fled.
  • A Bolonka breed dog, Dora, was later found leashed to a tree.
  • Forensic psychiatrist Thomas Knecht believes the perpetrator may have been attempting to inflict emotional harm or fulfill personal relational deficits.

Authorities are investigating the theft and subsequent return of three dogs taken from outside a supermarket in Glattpark, Switzerland, last week. The unusual case has prompted questions about the perpetrator’s motives, with experts suggesting a range of possibilities from malicious intent to deep-seated emotional needs.

The incident began Friday evening when three leashed dogs were stolen from in front of a Coop supermarket. A dachshund named Max was recovered Saturday after a local resident spotted a suspect with the dog. When confronted, the suspect dropped the leash and ran away. The Bolonka breed dog, Dora, remained missing until she was found later, leashed to a tree.

Dora has now been reunited with her owner. According to a member of the local dog community, “She was found yesterday afternoon leashed to a tree here in Glattpark.” The individual added, “There’s still no sign of the perpetrator, but I’m confident someone will recognize him and the police will catch up.”

Dog Trainer Calls Leaving Pets Unattended ‘Very Careless’

The motivation behind stealing dogs and then returning them remains unclear. Gabriela Frei Gees, a dog trainer and behavior expert, said leaving a dog unattended outside a store, like the Coop in Glattpark, is “very careless.” She emphasized that even in the moment, the dog may be suffering.

Gees explained that dogs, like children, rely on their owners’ supervision. She also pointed out the risk of the animals being mistreated or harassed while left alone. “Many owners forget that not everyone likes dogs,” she said.

Psychologist Considers Possible Motives

Forensic psychiatrist Thomas Knecht, who has no established psychological profile for such behavior, offered potential explanations for the thefts. Knecht suggested the perpetrator may have intended to cause significant emotional distress to the owners, or to fulfill a personal need for connection. “If you take a dog from someone, you are very likely aware that you are causing them deep emotional pain,” he said.

“The question now is whether the perpetrator wanted to terrorize someone, or whether he was trying to help himself to a desperately needed relationship,” Knecht stated. He drew a parallel to cases where individuals kidnap babies to satisfy their own instincts and needs.

Knecht suggested the suspect’s actions of dropping one leash and tying up the other could indicate an attempt to minimize trouble. “Perhaps he realized he couldn’t keep the animal without drawing attention, as walking stolen dogs around town isn’t a good idea,” he said. “Or, he may have wanted to return the animals, which would be a case of belated remorse.”
