U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing mounting pressure amid allegations involving questionable actions regarding vessels suspected of drug trafficking and the use of the Signal messaging app to discuss sensitive military information.

The controversies have fueled increasing criticism and calls for his resignation.

“He’s in another difficult position. In fact, his two major problems have now converged,” said retired U.S. Marine Colonel and senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Mark Cancian, according to AFP on Sunday, December 7.

However, Cancian believes Hegseth still retains the confidence of President Donald Trump.

“But he still seems to have the backing of President Trump, even as he loses support from some Republicans. So, I don’t think he’s in a fatal situation,” Cancian stated.

Jim Townsend, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for European and NATO policy during the Obama administration, said Hegseth finds himself in a precarious position.

Townsend assessed that President Trump has a defense secretary who is causing him considerable headaches.

Townsend agreed that Hegseth is unlikely to be immediately dismissed.

“But if something really ignites the Republican Party or embarrasses Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, they might try to move him elsewhere,” Townsend said.

Yemen Strike

Hegseth previously faced criticism over alleged financial mismanagement at a veterans’ nonprofit organization where he previously worked, reports of excessive alcohol consumption, and accusations of sexual misconduct against a woman in California.

His tenure as defense secretary has also been marked by a series of controversies, including those surrounding a strike in Yemen launched in mid-March.

The Atlantic magazine revealed that the editor-in-chief inadvertently became involved in a Signal chat where officials, including Hegseth, discussed an upcoming operation.

The Pentagon chief sent a message regarding the timing of the strike hours before it occurred, and information about the aircraft and missiles involved.

The incident prompted an investigation by the Pentagon’s independent inspector general, which concluded in a report that Hegseth’s actions could have created a potential hazard for U.S. pilots.

Targeting Vessels Suspected of Drug Trafficking

Another controversy stems from a September 2 attack on a vessel suspected of carrying narcotics in the Pacific Ocean.

The initial strike left only survivors, while a follow-up attack resulted in the deaths of both individuals.

Hegseth and the White House have repeatedly stated that the decision to launch the second strike was made by operational commander Admiral Frank Bradley, not the Secretary of Defense.

Members of Congress attended a classified briefing on Capitol Hill this week and were shown video footage of the incident.

“The footage shows the U.S. military attacking shipwrecked sailors, bad guys,” but attacking shipwrecked sailors,” said Democratic Representative Jim Himes.

Hegseth is facing calls from some Democratic lawmakers to resign or be fired over the follow-up strike and the Signal controversy, but his position appears secure for now. The situation highlights the political complexities surrounding the administration’s handling of sensitive military operations.

However, Cancian said another scandal could prompt the Trump administration to remove him as defense secretary.

“If there were another scandal after this… the White House might lose patience,” Cancian said.
