FC Barcelona is reportedly targeting reinforcements in central defense during the winter transfer window. A pair of injuries to key players have left the Catalan club short-handed at the position, prompting a search for experienced options.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona is closely monitoring three potential signings, including Marcos Senesi and Stefan de Vrij. Veteran Nicolás Otamendi, 37, has also emerged as a possible addition for the La Liga leaders.
Otamendi currently plays for Benfica, where he is under contract through the middle of 2026. The Argentine defender remains a regular starter in Portugal, which could make a deal with Barcelona challenging.
De Vrij’s situation at Inter Milan is different. The former Feyenoord player has made 287 appearances for the Serie A club, but has seen his role diminish this season. The 33-year-old has featured in only eight matches this season, including just three Serie A contests, as coach Cristian Chivu has favored Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji, and Alessandro Bastoni in the three-man backline.
Another familiar name from the Dutch Eredivisie is also on Barcelona’s radar: Senesi. The 28-year-old left-footed center back moved from Feyenoord to Bournemouth in the summer of 2022 and quickly established himself as a key player in England.
Senesi’s contract is set to expire this summer, making him an attractive option for the Spanish giants. According to the BBC, he has already turned down several lucrative contract extension offers from Bournemouth. The potential for a free transfer could significantly boost Barcelona’s chances of landing the Argentinian.
