The University of Michigan is rapidly pursuing utah head coach Kyle Whittingham to fill its football program’s vacant leadership position, just weeks after dismissing sherrone Moore following both allegations of misconduct and a subsequent criminal investigation.Facing a Citrus Bowl appearance against Texas with a depleted roster and the looming opening of the NCAA transfer portal, Michigan officials are hoping to quickly finalize a deal with whittingham, whose 21-year tenure with the Utes has been marked by consistent success and stability. A decision is anticipated as early as Friday, perhaps ending a tumultuous period for the reigning national champions.
The University of Michigan’s coaching search is reportedly focusing on Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, sources have confirmed.
Michigan officials are expected to discuss Whittingham’s candidacy as soon as Friday, and a deal could be finalized quickly if approved. This comes after a tumultuous period for the Wolverines following the recent dismissal of Sherrone Moore.
Whittingham, 66, boasts an impressive 177-88 record over 21 seasons leading the Utes, including a remarkable undefeated 13-0 campaign in 2008. His consistent success has positioned him as a future candidate for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, with a 66.8% win percentage meeting the criteria for consideration.
Just earlier this month, Whittingham announced he was “stepping down” from his role at Utah, a move he playfully described as entering “the transfer portal,” suggesting he was open to other opportunities. The Utes, currently 10-2, are preparing to face a challenge in the Las Vegas Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Michigan moved to fill its head coaching vacancy after firing Moore on December 10 amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The situation escalated with Moore’s subsequent arrest and felony charges related to a home invasion and related misdemeanors. The Wolverines are now seeking a return to the championship form they achieved under Jim Harbaugh, culminating in an undefeated national championship in 2023.
Whittingham has built a reputation for developing tough, disciplined teams that excel at the line of scrimmage – a style that has often mirrored the physicality of Big Ten football, even while competing in the Mountain West, Pac-12, and Big 12 conferences.
While Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer was previously linked to the Michigan opening, that possibility faded after DeBoer led the Crimson Tide to a first-round playoff victory over Oklahoma. Alabama will now face Indiana in the Rose Bowl on January 1. The timing of a potential DeBoer hire also presented a risk of roster disruption with the NCAA transfer portal opening on January 2.
Michigan is set to play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, but interim coach Biff Poggi has warned the team could be without as many as 25 players.
The potential addition of Whittingham could provide much-needed stability to the roster and potentially mitigate further departures before the transfer portal officially opens, offering a sense of direction during a challenging time for the program.
