The Heat defended their total of 9-179, with the Strikers finishing at 172 all out. Balkin’s remarkable performance came after a nine-month layoff due to a stress fracture in his leg, making his debut all the more impressive.

“It’s been a crazy few days,” Balkin told Fox Cricket. “I’ve been coming here since I was really young – to play against guys like Chris Lynn … it’s a dream come true to be here. I got a little bit nervous after my first two overs not getting a wicket.”

“To come out here and play my first game… I’m still pretty shocked,” he added. “It’s a hell of a feeling.”

Stand-in Brisbane captain Xavier Bartlett was named man of the match for his outstanding bowling spell, claiming 3-26, including the key wickets of Matt Short (63 off 39) and Chris Lynn (22 off 24). Bartlett stepped up in the absence of Nathan McSweeney (ankle injury).

Bartlett’s evening wasn’t without incident, however, as he was struck on the thigh while batting. He expressed his frustration with the umpire’s decision not to call a no-ball on the delivery.

“It’s hit me in the stomach!” Bartlett was heard saying to the square leg umpire. Commentators joked about the severity of the impact, while replays sparked debate over whether the ball was a legal delivery.

Earlier, the Heat struggled in the powerplay, losing both openers, Colin Munro (14) and Jack Wildermuth (1), to fall to 2-35 after four overs. Matt Renshaw (33 off 21) and Max Bryant (63 off 32 balls) then rebuilt the innings, guiding Brisbane to a competitive 9-179.

In response, Matt Short was the lone bright spot for the Strikers, but wickets fell consistently around him. When Short was dismissed with 16 balls remaining, Adelaide’s hopes quickly faded.

RENSHAW’S T20 PUSH ROLLS ON

Brisbane star Matt Renshaw continues to build his case for a spot in the T20 World Cup squad, delivering a dynamic 21-ball knock against the Adelaide Strikers. Renshaw’s 33 included two fours and two sixes, one of which cleared the Gabba stands.

“He’s just so confident in his game at the moment, Matt Renshaw,” said Brad Haddin. “(Getting out) is the last thing on his mind.”

WADIA’S FOUR-BALL BLITZ

The Strikers appeared to be out of contention late in the contest at the Gabba after Jamie Overton fell for 10, leaving them at 5-120 and needing 60 runs off 35 balls. Jerrssis Wadia then ignited a late surge, smashing four consecutive sixes and a four off Jack Wildermuth to dramatically shift the momentum.

Despite a brief halt for medical attention after being struck, Wadia’s explosive hitting wasn’t enough to carry the Strikers to victory, as they lost 5-16 in the final 16 balls.
