Despite facing ongoing health challenges, a woman from Dieren, Netherlands, recently participated in the annual fundraising event Serious Request to benefit Spieren voor Spieren, an organization dedicated to supporting children with muscular diseases. Raising awareness and funds for rare conditions is crucial for driving research and improving patient care.
Carolien, as she is known, aimed to raise €200 for the cause. While she didn’t quite reach her goal, she still managed to collect €135 through a personal fundraising effort involving a stationary bike.
She explained that her fundraising was hampered by unexpected health setbacks. “My health, a tooth that had to be extracted by the dentist, didn’t allow me to put in kilometers on the exercise bike. Now that the pain from the treatment is subsiding, I’ve come down with the flu, which means I still need to take it easy.”
Even with these obstacles, Carolien persevered, continuing her efforts for an additional week after recovering from her initial illness. This dedication highlights the importance of community support in addressing health-related challenges.
This isn’t the first time Carolien has participated in Serious Request. Despite living with asthma and experiencing spasms in her arms and legs, Carolien-Sunshine Joosten consistently supports charitable causes. While long distances are difficult for her, she finds she can still contribute by using her stationary bike.
