Health officials in the Nord department of France are expanding breast cancer screening access in 2026 with a new mobile unit. The initiative aims to reach women aged 50-74, a demographic for which organized screenings are recommended and funded by the Assurance Maladie, France’s state health insurance program [[2]]. Approximately 5,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually in the Nord department, underscoring the importance of early detection efforts.

Residents of the Nord department in France will have additional opportunities for breast cancer screenings in 2026. Early detection is crucial for improving outcomes in breast cancer, a disease that affects millions worldwide. Each year, approximately 5,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the Nord department.
Mobile Screening Unit Increases Access
To expand access to vital screenings, the Nord department has launched a mobile health unit dedicated to breast cancer detection. The “Nord santé” truck offers mammograms and breast ultrasounds performed by a medical team including a radiologist and/or a general practitioner trained in radiation safety, an advanced practice nurse, a radiology technician, a medical assistant, and a medical secretary. Around 377,000 women aged 50 to 74 in the Nord region are eligible for the organized screening program offered by the Assurance Maladie (French Health Insurance).
During its initial run, the mobile unit successfully screened 280 residents.
