Poland’s critical infrastructure faced a significant increase in cyberattacks throughout 2025, with incidents doubling from the previous year, according to government officials. The attacks, which targeted essential services like power and water systems, particularly intensified around the New Year holiday period. While Polish defenses successfully prevented disruptions, Digital affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski warns the escalating threat requires bolstered cybersecurity resources and vigilance amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region. Investigations currently point to Russia as the primary source of the attacks.

Poland experienced a surge in cyberattacks targeting its critical infrastructure in 2025, with a doubling of incidents compared to the previous year, according to Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski.

The increase in attacks, particularly around the New Year holiday, has prompted calls for increased investment in cybersecurity measures. The Polish government successfully defended against these attacks, maintaining uninterrupted power supply, but officials warn that the scale of the threat necessitates a stronger defense posture.

“Poland is constantly under attack, and these attacks are intensifying in cyberspace,” Gawkowski stated in a recent interview. “2025 was a record year – we already know that – with a 100 percent increase in incidents compared to 2024.”

The attacks focused heavily on Poland’s power systems during the final days of 2024. Gawkowski emphasized that while the country successfully repelled the attacks and avoided power outages, the situation underscores the need for greater resources dedicated to national security.

Critical infrastructure sectors targeted include water and sanitation facilities, as well as the energy sector. In 2024, there were over 4,000 attacks on Poland’s power grid, a number that more than doubled in 2025, according to Gawkowski’s statements to Piotr Witwicki.

Gawkowski attributed the majority of the attacks to Russia. Investigations into the recent attacks from the end of December are currently underway. The increased cyber activity highlights the growing geopolitical risks facing Eastern European nations.

The minister also praised the work of the Polish Armed Forces’ Cyber Defense Component and the country’s Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) in mitigating the threats. He further credited the collaboration between the Ministries of Digital Affairs and Energy, along with Polish Grid, for ensuring the stability of the power supply.
