Washington D.C. – A planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro is set to occur at teh White House in the coming weeks, following a recent phone call intended to de-escalate tensions. The announcement arrives after Trump made highly controversial and unsubstantiated claims accusing Petro of drug trafficking, sparking a diplomatic crisis and raising concerns about potential U.S. intervention in Colombia mirroring recent actions in Venezuela. This development marks a significant moment in U.S.-Colombia relations, particularly given the history of American involvement in the region’s drug war.

Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he and Petro had spoken by phone, stating they discussed their recent disagreements, including issues related to the drug trade.
“I appreciated the call and his tone, and look forward to meeting with him in the near future” at the White House,” Trump said.
The announcement follows Trump’s earlier accusation that Petro is a drug trafficker, a claim the Colombian president vehemently denied.
Trump leveled the accusations after U.S. forces launched a surprise military operation in Caracas, Venezuela, on Saturday, January 3, targeting military sites in an attempt to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, January 4, Trump threatened similar military action against Colombia.
Trump stated that the South American nation was “also very sick” and “run by people who like cocaine and sell it to the United States.”
“He has a cocaine factory and it won’t be there very long,” Trump added, according to AFP reports on Monday, January 5.
When asked by reporters if a similar military intervention to Venezuela could occur in Colombia, the Republican leader responded: “Sounds good to me.”
“You know why, because they are killing a lot of people,” Trump claimed without providing evidence.
Petro Rejects Trump’s Allegations
Gustavo Petro dismissed Trump’s accusations, stating that “my name does not appear in any court records.”
