Residents of South Jakarta are hopeful for eased congestion as the provincial government prepares to dismantle 98 abandoned monorail pillars along Jalan HR Rasuna Said, a project slated to begin next week. The decaying infrastructure has long been a source of frustration for commuters adn a visual blight on the city landscape. While the demolition is largely welcomed, questions remain regarding the notable financial cost – estimated at Rp 100 billion – associated with removing the unfinished project and restoring the roadway.
The Jakarta provincial government is preparing to dismantle abandoned monorail pillars along Jalan HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta, a project that residents hope will alleviate longstanding traffic congestion in the area. The demolition is slated to begin next week.
“I’m already imagining that spot becoming a major bottleneck,” said Clara, a 30-year-old resident of the Rasuna Said area, on Sunday, January 11, 2026. “Hopefully, there’s a plan to prevent traffic jams during the dismantling process.”
Clara expressed support for the demolition, saying it would improve the area’s aesthetics. “The current governor seems focused on improving the city’s appearance, and that’s a good thing. It’s better than having these abandoned pillars just sitting there. It would be nice if removing them improves the view.”

Other residents echoed Clara’s sentiments, while also questioning the financial implications of dismantling a structure that was never completed. “It’s frustrating to think about the billions of rupiah that were spent on this project, only to have it torn down and require another billion to remove it,” Clara added. “It’s exhausting to see so many failed projects like this.”

Rahma, a 23-year-old resident, expressed concern that the demolition could worsen existing traffic problems, particularly during peak hours. “I just hope it doesn’t make the traffic even worse around there,” she said.
“It seems like if the monorail isn’t going to be used, it’s better to take it down,” Rahma continued. “It would be great if they could just turn it into a wider road to ease congestion.”

Kiki, a worker in the Rasuna Said area, also voiced support for the demolition, noting that the pillars contribute to traffic congestion by occupying a lane of traffic. “Honestly, it’s often very congested there because of the monorail pillars themselves,” he said.
Pras, a 35-year-old resident who frequently travels through the area, hopes Jalan Rasuna Said will resemble Jalan Sudirman after the demolition. He added that, in addition to causing traffic, the abandoned pillars are an eyesore.
“Thankfully, they’re finally going to take it down. Hopefully, it will be similar to Jalan Sudirman, without the lane dividers. It often causes congestion because people switch lanes at certain points, like Patra Kuningan. Plus, the pillars are unsightly,” Pras said.
The Jakarta Bina Marga (Road Construction) Department announced on Sunday, January 11, that it will begin dismantling the 98 monorail pillars along Jalan HR Rasuna Said in South Jakarta next Wednesday. The project aims to improve traffic flow and the overall appearance of the area.
“There are a total of 98 monorail pillars that will be dismantled,” said Dinar Wenny, Head of Data and Information at the Jakarta Bina Marga Department, to reporters on Sunday.
Wenny stated that the demolition is expected to be completed by September 2026. She expressed hope that the project will create a more ideal roadway. “After the demolition, there will be improvements to the Jalan HR Rasuna Said area, including road and sidewalk improvements, enhanced pedestrian facilities, and adjustments to supporting elements to make it safer and more comfortable, including improved street lighting,” she said.
Heru Suwondo, Head of the Jakarta Bina Marga Department, previously stated that the cost includes not only the dismantling of the monorail pillars but also the renovation of the road and sidewalks along the eastern side of Rasuna Said.
“The total cost is around Rp 100 billion,” Heru said at City Hall on Wednesday, January 7.
“We will, of course, renovate the roads and sidewalks using the regional budget. These are our assets, so we will renovate everything using the regional budget,” he added.
