Torrejón de Ardoz kicked off its year as the European city of Sport with a busy weekend of competition across multiple disciplines. From the Princess Cup in volleyball, which saw a strong showing from local team UCAM Torrejón, too a thrilling futsal match-up and a swimming challenge, the city showcased its dedication to athletics.The events drew notable crowds and the attendance of key regional sports officials, signaling a prosperous start to a year of sporting events planned for the Madrid municipality.

Torrejón de Ardoz hosted a thrilling weekend of sports action, highlighted by a silver medal in volleyball and a high-scoring draw in futsal.

Torrejón de Ardoz, January 12, 2026 – The city showcased its sporting prowess with a packed schedule of events, including league matches in football, futsal, volleyball, basketball, and handball. The weekend’s marquee events included the Princess Cup in volleyball, a highly anticipated futsal clash between Movistar Inter FS and ElPozo Murcia, and the 2nd City of Torrejón Swimming Challenge.

The UCAM Torrejón women’s volleyball team reached the final of the Princess Cup, ultimately falling to San Cruz Cuesta Piedra 3-1. Despite the loss, the Torrejón squad electrified the José Antonio Paraíso Pavilion, drawing a crowd of nearly 1,000 fans. Mayor Alejandro Navarro was in attendance to support UCAM Torrejón, alongside First Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Urban Planning, Housing and Youth, Víctor Miranda, and Councilor for Sports and Tourism, Miriam Gutiérrez. The tournament also attracted prominent figures including Alberto Tomé, Director General of Sports for the Community of Madrid; María Cabezón, Head of Federate Sports for the Community of Madrid; Spanish Volleyball Federation President Felipe Pascual; Madrid Volleyball Federation President Pedro Gironés; and Rafa Pascual, widely considered the greatest Spanish volleyball player of all time.

Saturday saw a capacity crowd of over 3,000 spectators pack the Jorge Garbajosa Pavilion for the Spanish futsal classic between Movistar Inter FS and ElPozo Murcia. The match ended in a dramatic 3-3 draw, showcasing the skill and intensity of Spain’s top futsal teams.

Rounding out the Super Weekend of Sport was the 2nd City of Torrejón Swimming Challenge, organized by the Tri-Torrejón Triathlon Club. Held at the Juan Antonio Samaranch Sports Center, the event featured 130 adult (15+) and 60 youth (10-14) swimmers competing in relay races. Younger swimmers completed 50-meter legs in a 5x50m relay, while adults tackled a more demanding 10x100m relay format. Mayor Navarro and Councilor Gutiérrez presented the awards to the winning teams.

“We’ve started 2026, our year as European City of Sport, with a Super Weekend full of excitement and great competitions,” said Mayor Alejandro Navarro. “We can look forward to a year in which Torrejón de Ardoz will host numerous top-level sporting events, and we will continue to invest in improving our sports facilities and creating new ones.”
