Norwegian Air has canceled its flights between Dubai and Oslo on Saturday and Sunday, citing escalating tensions in the Middle East as the reason for the disruption.
“Based on the geopolitical situation in the region and with consideration for the safety of both our passengers and crew, we have decided to cancel departures to and from Dubai today and tomorrow,” Norwegian spokesperson Lina Lindegaard Carlsen told Dagbladet on Saturday afternoon.
– Passengers affected by the cancellations have been notified, and we are working to rebook them as soon as conditions allow,” she said.
Carlsen confirmed the cancellations affect one round-trip flight on Saturday and another on Sunday.
– This is a precautionary measure, in line with other airlines that have made the same assessment,” Carlsen said.
“An Armada”
The cancellations come as several major airlines have suspended flights to the Middle East following increased tensions between the United States and Iran, according to industry publication Simpleflying.
Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, SWISS, and United Airlines are among those who have paused service to the region.
The move follows repeated threats from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding potential intervention in the conflict in Iran, particularly citing the need to protect civilian protesters from government violence, as reported by Dagbladet.
This weekend, Trump stated that a “armada” was en route to Iran, The Guardian reported.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route from the World Economic Forum in Davos on Friday night, Trump said, according to the newspaper:
– We have many ships going into the area, just in case. I hope nothing happens, but we’re watching it very closely… we have an armada heading there, and maybe we won’t have to use it,” Trump said.
Precautionary Measures
Norwegian’s decision to cancel flights was made in response to the broader security concerns, a spokesperson confirmed.
– Are Norwegian’s cancellations a direct result of Trump’s statements about sending an “armada” to Iran?
– The assessments are based on the geopolitical situation in the region and the recently escalated tensions,” said Norwegian spokesperson Carlsen.
– What happens after the weekend?
– We are continuously evaluating the situation. Passengers will be contacted if any changes occur.
