CSKA and Dunav Ruse are facing off in a friendly match at the club’s training base in Pancharevo. The match is closed to fans and media representatives. You can follow it with minute-by-minute commentary on ТОПСПОРТ.
This friendly echoes a similar match exactly ten years ago, when the two teams also met as a final preparation. That match ended in a dominant 6-0 victory for CSKA against the then-league leader (and current leader) in the Second League. CSKA’s head coach is Христо Янев in both instances, and the kickoff time is also the same – 2:00 PM.
Today’s match for CSKA is the first in Bulgaria following the passing of the legendary Dimitar Penev. That match also came after the death of another major figure in Bulgarian football, Trifon Ivanov.
The biggest difference is that back then, CSKA was leading the Third League with 17 wins from 17 matches and was using the game to fine-tune their preparations against a team from a higher division before the Cup battles. Now, the 31-time champions have endured their worst start in club history, but winning the Cup remains a priority.
In 2016, CSKA thrashed their opponents 6-0, having already defeated other teams from the top flight. In the fall, the “Army Men” had dispatched Neftohimik (3-1), Spartak Pleven (2-0), and Sozopol (3-0), and the resounding victory over the Second League leaders signaled they were ready to challenge the elite. They would later prove that to be true, winning the most romantic trophy in the club’s history.
Interestingly, Martin Lukov, the current backup goalkeeper for Levski, was in goal for Dunav in that friendly, while the current president of the Ruse club, Diyan Dimov, played in midfield.
