A prisoner exchange involving 314 soldiers between Russia and Ukraine took place on February 5, according to reports from Reuters and other news agencies. The exchange comes as international efforts continue to find a path toward de-escalation in the ongoing conflict.

U.S. President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced via social media that the exchange was the result of a trilateral negotiation between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.

Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported that both Russia and Ukraine exchanged 157 prisoners each.

The prisoner swap was reportedly brokered by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Ukraine and Russia previously conducted three prisoner exchanges through negotiations between May and July of last year.

It remains unclear whether the exchange included two North Korean prisoners of war who were captured in January of last year. Those soldiers reportedly expressed a desire to defect to South Korea through letters sent to a North Korean defector organization.

South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated it will accept any North Korean prisoners who request to come to South Korea, and has communicated this position to Ukraine.

The meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE, which began on February 4 and continued for a second day, concluded after approximately four hours on February 5.

Ukrainian officials confirmed the conclusion of the talks but did not disclose specific details of the agreements reached.

This round of negotiations marks the second such meeting between the three nations, following talks held on January 23-24.
