France’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts are under heightened alert for severe weather conditions as a combination of rainfall, high tides and strong winds threaten widespread flooding. Orange alerts-the country’s second-highest level-have been issued for multiple departments, including the popular tourist destinations of Corsica and Gironde. authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution as they monitor rising water levels and prepare for potential disruptions to travel and daily life. The current situation follows a January that saw record-breaking rainfall in several regions, exacerbating the risk of overflow from already saturated riverbanks [[1]].

Coastal regions of France are bracing for potential flooding and strong winds as weather alerts were issued Thursday, February 5, 2026. The warnings, impacting areas from the French Riviera to the southwest, come as officials monitor rising sea levels and river conditions.

The Alpes-Maritimes and Southern Corsica are under orange alerts for coastal submersion starting at 6 a.m. on Friday, February 6, according to Météo-France. Simultaneously, the Finistère department remains under an orange alert for river flooding, and the Gironde department is still facing a similar warning.

In Finistère, recent rainfall – with several towns in Finistère and Morbihan either breaking or nearing their January precipitation records – combined with high tides, could lead to localized flooding, particularly around Quimperlé, where a “significant flood” is anticipated. Vigicrues, the French flood forecasting service, warned of these potential overflows.

Corsica is expected to experience strengthening winds, with particularly strong gusts near Solenzara, starting late Thursday night. These conditions, coupled with rough seas, are forecast to cause a significant rise in sea levels Friday morning, according to the meteorological institute.

Further north, in Gironde, Vigicrues has cautioned that moderate to significant overflows are expected in the Bordeaux and Libourne areas during upcoming high tides. The service added that the tide expected Friday morning will be higher than the one experienced Thursday evening.
