FC Porto and Sporting CP drew 1-1 on Monday in a pivotal match of the 21st round of the Portuguese Liga Portugal, maintaining Porto’s lead in the standings by four points.
A stoppage-time goal from Luis Suárez in the 90+10th minute rescued a point for Sporting CP at FC Porto (1-1), keeping the reigning champions within striking distance of the league leaders.
The Colombian international’s goal, a rebound after his initial penalty attempt was saved by Diogo Costa, sent a shockwave through the Estádio do Dragão, denying Porto a chance to extend their advantage following Seko Fofana’s 77th-minute opener.
The draw leaves both teams separated by the same four-point margin they entered the 21st round with, with Porto holding 56 points, having gone two games without a win, and Sporting CP on 52.
The match was a tightly contested affair with few clear-cut scoring opportunities, as Porto looked to rebound from their first league defeat of the season against Casa Pia (2-1). They welcomed Froholdt back into the starting lineup, alongside defenders Kiwior and Alberto Costa.
Sporting CP, meanwhile, made seven changes to the side that secured a hard-fought 3-2 extra-time victory over AVS in the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal.
The first half saw a brief disruption as pyrotechnics were set off in the stands, prompting a warning on the stadium screens about potential match interruption.
Fofana opened the scoring for Porto with a determined effort in the box, launched by Francesco Farioli for a dream debut. However, a handball by Francisco Moura late in the game presented Sporting CP with a lifeline. Costa initially saved Suárez’s penalty, but the rebound fell perfectly for the Colombian, who now has 19 Liga Portugal goals – tied with Benfica’s Pavlidis for second in the scoring chart.
