The Egyptian government has appointed former handball star Johar Nabil as the modern Minister of Youth and Sports, a move lauded by the Al Ahly club.

The appointment, announced on February 11, 2026, marks the end of Ashraf Sobhi’s long tenure in the ministerial role. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly’s government made the decision to bring in Nabil, a celebrated athlete with a distinguished career in handball.

Al Ahly’s board of directors, led by Mahmoud El-Khatib, released a statement extending their congratulations to Nabil on his new position. “The board of directors, headed by Mahmoud El-Khatib, the executive management, and the sporting sectors, extends its sincere congratulations to Johar Nabil following the confidence placed in him by the political leadership and his appointment as Minister of Youth and Sports in the new ministerial formation,” the statement read.

The club expressed its hope for Nabil’s success in furthering the development and achievements of Egyptian sports. Al Ahly wished him continued success “towards further development and achievements for Egyptian sport during the coming period.”

Nabil is a well-known figure in Egyptian sports, particularly within the handball community, having achieved significant athletic accomplishments throughout his career. These achievements, combined with his academic qualifications, have previously led to prominent positions.

Nabil began his career with Al Ahly’s youth teams, progressing to the first team where he secured numerous championships. He remained with the club from 1982 until his retirement in 2005.
