A Belgian father and daughter are facing legal repercussions after allegedly collecting unemployment benefits while operating a hotel in southern France.
The pair failed to appear in court Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the Namur correctional court to answer questions about the alleged fraud. Between 2018 and 2023, the father reportedly received approximately 139,000 euros in unemployment benefits as the head of household, while his daughter collected around 29,000 euros as a cohabitant.
The total amount of benefits at the center of the case is 168,000 euros. The case highlights the challenges authorities face in tracking down individuals who may be fraudulently claiming benefits while working abroad.
“Sur Google, les commentaires sont très élogieux pour cette famille belge qui a ouvert son hôtel dans le sud de la France,” remarked substitute prosecutor Stenuick for the labor auditor’s office, with a touch of irony.
Authorities say both individuals officially hold shares in the hotel and receive dividends, in addition to the unemployment payments. The father has a history of similar business ventures, having been a manager of an agricultural operation in Mayotte from 2011 to 2022, and another company between 2022 and 2023.
