Experiencing nausea, constipation, or fatigue after taking vitamin D supplements? The cause may be surprisingly linked to calcium levels in the blood, according to nutrition specialist Morgan Walker, in statements to Verywell Health. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and plays a crucial role in regulating calcium absorption.
Elevated calcium levels can occur when taking high doses of vitamin D for extended periods, or even moderate doses in individuals who are particularly sensitive. This imbalance can then trigger a range of uncomfortable symptoms.
Signs of excess calcium include nausea, constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness, headache, increased thirst, and frequent urination, as well as what’s often described as “brain fog.” These symptoms can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being, highlighting the importance of mindful supplementation.
In severe cases, irregular heart rhythms or kidney problems can develop. Walker also noted that a magnesium deficiency can worsen the issue, as the body needs magnesium to metabolize vitamin D. Insufficient magnesium can lead to symptoms like muscle cramps and sleep disturbances.
Feeling unwell immediately after taking a supplement might not be due to the vitamin D itself, but rather a sensitivity to other ingredients, such as the oils used in the capsules – like soybean, coconut, or corn oil. Walker advises temporarily stopping the supplement if symptoms appear and getting blood tests to check vitamin levels and related elements.
It’s crucial not to exceed the daily dose of 4,000 international units (IU) without medical supervision, Walker stressed, warning that exceeding this amount increases the risk of side effects. Maintaining appropriate vitamin D levels is important for overall health, but doing so safely requires awareness, and caution.
