Cologne – Flights at Cologne Bonn Airport are largely suspended due to a security incident. A spokesperson for the Federal Police confirmed that no departures are currently possible. The reason: the airport’s security area has been closed.
“There is currently no acute danger to life and limb, it is a precautionary measure that we are taking,” the spokesperson said.
According to the spokesperson, the air security control center was closed at 6:37 a.m., and the security area of Terminals 1 and 2 was cleared by the Federal Police. “This is a precautionary measure,” the spokesperson said. “The measures are still ongoing, and we cannot currently say when they will be completed.”
New Technology Blamed for Closure?
Authorities are currently withholding specific details about the security incident, stating they are still investigating and want to release only confirmed information.

The WDR reports that the new security technology in the passenger control area may not be functioning correctly. According to the broadcaster, it cannot be ruled out that the CT scanners are not working as intended. This could have allowed prohibited items to enter the security area. The Federal Police spokesperson confirmed that new security technology was introduced the previous day. “Whether this new technology is the cause, everything is still in the area of investigation.”

Currently, no departing passengers can be processed in the security area. Passenger and baggage screening is not possible. “we cannot allow any departing guests into the security area at this time.” Incoming flights are not affected, and travelers can exit the airport without issue.
