A debut feature from actor Rajesh Madhavan, “Pennum Porattum” is gaining momentum in theaters following a gala premiere at an international film festival. The film, set in the village of Pattada, tackles social issues through satire, with a screenplay by Ravi Shankar.
The story centers on Charulata, who is pressured into an unwanted marriage, her lover Baburaj, and a dog named ‘Suttu’ who falls victim to the village’s cruelty. “Pennum Porattum” explores how minor disputes escalate into major conflicts and examines humanity’s flawed relationship with animals.
The film features a character named Gopalan Master, who attempts to guide the villagers toward peace, but meets resistance from one individual, creating a pivotal moment in the narrative. A particularly resonant line from the film, spoken by Suttu, is, “The world is vast enough for you to run away if a place doesn’t suit you.” Notably, the dog Suttu is positioned as the true hero of the story.
Director Rajesh Madhavan’s skill is evident in the natural performances of the cast and the authentic depiction of Pattada. The film’s use of local slang and the cinematography by Sabin Uralikandi add to its visual appeal. Editing is by Chaman Chakko, with music composed by Don Vincent. The inclusion of newcomers and animals contributes to the film’s realistic feel.
The film features around 100 newcomers and is produced by STK Frames, led by Santhosh T. Kuruvila, and Binu George Alexander Productions. The production companies are known for delivering distinctive films such as “Maheshinte Prathikaaram” and “Na Thaan Case Kodu,” and “Pennum Porattum” continues their tradition of experimental filmmaking. Early reactions suggest the film is attracting strong audience appreciation and is poised for a successful run in theaters.
