A South Korean woman was sentenced to life in prison on November 5, 2020, for the calculated 2019 murder and dismemberment of her husband on Jeju Island, a case that shocked the nation. The crime stemmed from a dispute over visitation rights to their son, and revealed a pattern of domestic abuse and escalating conflict.

Visitation Rights Trigger Deadly Plot

The couple’s troubled relationship began during their honeymoon in 2013, when a disagreement over shopping led to a missed flight and a heated argument. Following the marriage, the wife frequently physically abused her husband. After divorcing in 2017, the woman retained custody of their son and actively prevented the father from seeing him. The man pursued legal action to secure visitation, and in 2019, finally won the right to see his child twice a month. This scheduled reunion ultimately proved fatal.

A Carefully Constructed Deception

According to reports, the woman attempted to mislead investigators by portraying herself as a victim of a sexual assault. She even sent text messages from her husband’s phone, pleading for her not to report the alleged attack, hoping to deflect suspicion. She claimed he had attempted to sexually assault her and then disappeared. But, surveillance footage quickly contradicted her story.

Evidence Mounts Against the Accused

Police discovered traces of blood at the Jeju Island guesthouse where the murder took place. A search of the woman’s home and vehicle revealed the presence of sedatives and tools believed to have been used in the crime. Investigators also found that she had been researching methods of murder and disposal online, indicating premeditation. The victim’s car remained parked at the guesthouse for three days, raising further suspicion.

Unwavering Denial, Life Sentence Upheld

Despite the overwhelming evidence, the woman consistently maintained her innocence throughout the legal proceedings, refusing to admit to planning the murder. However, the Supreme Court of South Korea upheld a life sentence on November 5, 2020. The victim’s remains were never fully recovered, compounding the grief for his family and the outrage of the public.
