Taipei, Taiwan – An office director for a Taiwanese lawmaker has been released on bail following allegations of embezzling funds intended for assistants, according to multiple reports. The director, whose name has not been widely released, posted bail of 300,000 Novel Taiwan dollars and is restricted from leaving the country or its waters.
The case centers around accusations that funds earmarked for assistant salaries were misappropriated. Lawmaker Kao Chin-su-mei is reportedly involved in the investigation, though details of her alleged role remain unclear.
The unfolding situation has drawn criticism from within Taiwan’s political landscape. Former Kuomintang chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu accused the current administration of pursuing a politically motivated investigation, stating, “Today they are going after the opposition party, tomorrow they will travel after anyone who doesn’t comply.”
Adding another layer to the controversy, Wang Shih-chien, a politician, invoked a previous statement made by former President Tsai Ing-wen in support of Kao Chin-su-mei. This move has prompted criticism from some, including Lin Tzu-yang, who argued that the quote should not be used to shield someone potentially colluding with China.
Government officials have reportedly expressed disagreement with Wang Shih-chien’s actions, with one stating, “This person is not one of my comrades.” The case highlights the ongoing political tensions within Taiwan and the scrutiny surrounding the use of public funds.
