A 10-month-old baby girl in Kerala, India, became the state’s youngest organ donor after a tragic road accident, giving a second chance at life to five other infants. Alin Sherin Abraham was declared brain-dead earlier this month following the incident, and her parents made the courageous decision to donate her kidneys, liver, eyes, and heart valves.
The selfless act has drawn praise from across India, including from actor and Member of Parliament Kamal Haasan, who publicly commended Alin’s parents, Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John, for their strength and compassion. The donation highlights the growing awareness and acceptance of organ donation in India, and the potential to save lives even in the face of unimaginable grief.
Alin was critically injured in a road accident in Kottayam, and initially received treatment at a local hospital. Her condition deteriorated, and she was transferred to Amrita Hospital in Kochi, where she was ultimately diagnosed with brain death. Thousands gathered at Nedungadapally St Thomas CSI Church Cemetery in Mallappally, Pathanamthitta, to pay their respects as she was laid to rest with full state honors, ETV Bharat reported.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lauded the parents’ decision and ordered a police guard of honor as a mark of respect.
Kamal Haasan’s Statement
“Salute to Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John,” Haasan wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Our baby, Alin Sherin Abraham, lived for months within her mother, and ten months embraced by her parents’ boundless love. Now, she will support five other babies live better lives.”
“By mindset and by heart, you are – and will always remain – loving parents,” Haasan continued. “Please retrieve your happiness through life. You both truly deserve it.” The Deccan Chronicle too reported on Haasan’s tribute.
