For the first time since the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a European commercial flight has landed in Venezuela. The aircraft, operated by Spanish airline Air Europa, departed from Madrid.
Flightradar24 data shows the plane touched down at Simón Bolívar International Airport, near the capital Caracas, at 9:00 PM local time.
The arrival marks a shift after nearly all international airlines suspended flights to Venezuela following the U.S. Action on January 3, when President Maduro was detained and brought to New York. Many carriers had already stopped service by late November, following warnings issued by the United States.
“In a real democracy, we can talk about anything. But I do want to say that the majority of Venezuelans support President Trump’s actions,” one woman told a newspaper anonymously, citing fears of reprisal upon her return.
