Stefano Domenicali, the head of Formula 1, expressed confidence on Thursday, February 20, 2026, that Max Verstappen will remain with the sport despite the four-time world champion’s recent criticisms of the new 2026 cars. The reassurance comes after Domenicali and Verstappen held a one-hour discussion in Bahrain.
Verstappen has voiced concerns about the new regulations, describing the cars as “anti-racing” and comparing them to “Formula E on steroids,” according to ESPN. He previously stated he wouldn’t continue in F1 if he didn’t enjoy driving the new machinery.
“I met with Max,” Domenicali said. “We know Max will be part of the future of Formula 1. It is very important we listen to him, as we do with all of the top drivers.” He added, “He has a way of saying something that can be interpreted in a certain way. But I can guarantee to you that Max wants and does care about Formula 1 more than anyone else.”
The new F1 cars feature engines with a near 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power, placing a greater emphasis on energy management and battery regeneration. This has drawn criticism from several drivers, including Fernando Alonso, who joked that Aston Martin’s chef could drive the car at certain points, and Lewis Hamilton, who said understanding the new formula requires a university degree. Motorsport.com reports that Domenicali urged fans to “stay calm” regarding the new rules.
Concerns have as well been raised about overtaking opportunities and the time it takes for the new turbo power units to reach full speed, leading to tests of an elongated start procedure to prevent cars from being left stationary on the grid. The season is set to commence with the Australian Grand Prix on March 8. Sky Sports notes that Lando Norris also echoed Verstappen’s sentiments, stating he didn’t want to immediately complain about the new cars.
Despite the initial concerns, Domenicali remains optimistic that Verstappen’s passion for the sport will keep him committed. The outcome of these new regulations will be closely watched as F1 aims for a more sustainable future, and Verstappen’s performance will be a key indicator of their success.
