Timothée Chalamet’s “Marty Supreme” Scores Big at the Box Office, Receives Oscar Nominations

Josh Safdie’s sports comedy-drama, “Marty Supreme” starring Timothée Chalamet, is proving to be a major success with both critics and audiences. The film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 6, 2025, and released nationwide on December 25, 2025, has garnered nine Oscar nominations.

Chalamet portrays Marty Mauser, a table tennis player loosely based on Marty Reisman, in his quest to turn into world champion. The film also features Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher in supporting roles. The film’s success adds to a strong year for A24, its distributor.

“Marty Supreme” has already grossed $151.9 million worldwide, according to box office reports. In France, the film made a significant splash, achieving a “smash” at the box office, as reported by Les Inrocks.

The project began development in 2018 after Safdie received a copy of Reisman’s 1974 memoir, The Money Player: The Confessions of America’s Greatest Table Tennis Champion and Hustler. Safdie offered Chalamet the lead role that same year. Telquel.ma notes the film is being hailed for its artistry and performances.

Filmed on 35mm stock with cinematography by Darius Khondji and a score composed by Daniel Lopatin, “Marty Supreme” marks Safdie’s first solo directorial effort since 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed. IMDb details the cast and crew, and provides a synopsis of the film’s plot: “Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.”

Despite interest from Félix Lebrun, Le Figaro reports that Safdie ultimately decided against including him in the project, as Lebrun’s goals did not align with filming.

The film is currently available in theaters, and is being touted as a must-see by Atlantico and other publications.
