There’s no such thing as a “bad” food, according to dietitian Pauline Gouth. Instead, she emphasizes that the quantity and frequency of consumption are key factors in a healthy diet. She explains, “A balanced diet, in my opinion, is not a perfect diet, nor a list of forbidden foods. It’s a diet that: meets our needs, respects our hunger, and leaves room for pleasure and social life.”
Understanding the composition and effects of each food we consume is still important. White flour, a common ingredient in many kitchens, is often used to make pasta, cakes, crepes, and other treats. This flour, typically made from wheat, is fine in texture, neutral in flavor, and low in fiber.
Is This Food More Dangerous Than Sugar?
Despite its widespread use, nutritionist Pierre Dukan suggests that excessive consumption of white flour can be detrimental to health. In a video shared on his Instagram account, Dukan points out that sugar is indeed harmful to the body. He explains, “Its harmful power lies in the fact that it raises blood sugar levels and, in response, insulin converts excess glucose into visceral fat, the most toxic type for organs.”
He adds, “Sugar and flour both complete up in the blood as glucose. But they don’t get there at the same speed. And that speed is what matters when it comes to the danger of a carbohydrate.”
High Glycemic Index
The specialist reminds us that the glycemic index of sugar is 70, already considered high, but that of white flour is a striking 85. He asserts, “That’s why white bread, refined flours, and their derivatives should be avoided if you want to stay slim and excluded if you want to lose weight or manage diabetes.”
A 2021 study published in The British Medical Journal found that high consumption of refined grains, such as croissants and white bread, is associated with an increased risk of major cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and premature death. These findings highlight the importance of being mindful of our intake of foods made with white flour. While complete elimination isn’t necessary, moderation is key for maintaining good health.
