The village of Ras el-Ein al-Auja, located a few kilometers north of Jericho, is now marked only by remnants of construction materials and hastily abandoned personal belongings. Just three weeks ago, international media were reporting on the forced displacement of the last Bedouin residents of the southern Jordan Valley, a situation that drew condemnation from local activists. Their efforts to provide a protective presence for the families ultimately failed to prevent ongoing harassment and near-daily attacks by Israeli extremist settlers.

On January 1, settlers cut off access to the village and subsequently established an outpost within it, aiming to drive residents from their homes. By early January, residents had packed their belongings and livestock into vans, leaving under the watchful gaze of approximately ten Israelis. What they could not carry with them, they burned to prevent its use by the settlers. A week later, Israeli Member of Parliament Zvi Sukkot, of the Religious Zionist Party (led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich), was involved in a physical altercation with protestors demonstrating against the forced displacement at the site of the former Bedouin village. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 700 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank since the beginning of 2026, including 600 residents of Ras el-Ein al-Auja.
