Hollywood’s biggest stars – including Zendaya, Dua Lipa, SZA, and Chappell Roan – are embracing a striking hair color trend: deep, rich reds. The vibrant hue is making a splash on red carpets and beyond, and there’s a good reason for its popularity. Dark red shades complement nearly every skin tone and eye color, but knowing how to choose the right shade is key. Hairstylist Simone Rigliaco shares essential tips for achieving the glance.
Finding Your Perfect Red Shade
The key to rocking the red hair trend lies in finding the right tone for your complexion. “Exceptionally fair, cool-toned complexions look particularly harmonious with cooler reds,” explains hairstylist Simone Rigliaco. He recommends Merlot or a deep auburn. If your undertones are warmer, he suggests, “Dark copper and tones with orange pigments create radiance.” For those with darker skin tones, Rigliaco advises opting for intense, rich reds: “Deep red shades with warmth beautifully contrast with the skin.” Once the tone complements your complexion, eye color becomes less of a factor.
Subtle Change and Perfect Blend
The red palette is also a popular choice among clients in Switzerland. “Especially during the cooler season, dark red is in high demand, with Merlot or copper brown being very popular,” Rigliaco notes. He attributes this to the desire for change without being too dramatic or committing to a full blonde transformation. He describes dark red as the perfect blend of statement and elegance. This trend reflects a broader move towards bolder, yet accessible, hair colors in the current beauty landscape.

Attention: Red Requires a Lot of Care
While the look is stunning, red hair comes with a caveat. “Red is one of the molecules that washes out the fastest,” the expert explains. To combat this, he recommends using a color-safe shampoo without harsh sulfates. “Washing your hair with less heat also helps.” He additionally suggests using UV protection and regularly using color-refreshing conditioners or glossings – “a refresh is needed every four to six weeks.” Rigliaco adds: “Anyone who wants to wear red long-term must be prepared to invest a little more in hair care.”
