Near Angers, a group is working to bring attention to the challenges faced by those living with “invisible illnesses.” The initiative aims to break the stigma surrounding conditions that aren’t immediately apparent, fostering greater understanding and support for individuals affected.

The effort, spearheaded by three individuals, seeks to highlight the daily struggles of people with conditions like diabetes and other chronic diseases. Raising awareness about these often-unseen health battles is crucial for improving quality of life and ensuring those affected receive appropriate care and empathy.

In December 2021, two medical students in Angers organized a screening and discussion around the documentary “Pour quelques barres de chocolat” (For a Few Chocolate Bars), focusing on diabetes. Ouest-France reported on the event.

The group’s work comes as awareness grows regarding the impact of invisible illnesses. In March 2025, Ouest-France featured the story of Lucie, who lives with an invisible illness, and noted that one in ten women are affected by similar conditions.

The initiative as well draws attention to the experiences of individuals like Béatrice Abelard, who, in October 2025, launched an online fundraising campaign to aid manage her own invisible illness. Ouest-France covered her story, highlighting the financial burdens often associated with managing chronic, unseen health issues.

“Nous souhaitons lever ce tabou” – “We want to break this taboo” – reflects the core mission of the group, aiming to create a more supportive and understanding environment for those navigating life with invisible illnesses. This effort underscores the importance of recognizing and validating the experiences of individuals whose health challenges are not always visible.
