Sony Bluepoint Closure: Canceled God of War & Bloodborne Remake

Sony’s decision to shutter Bluepoint Games, one of its most respected studios, just five years after its acquisition, appears to stem from a canceled “God of War” project and the failure to secure approval for a “Bloodborne” remake. The move underscores the challenges even highly-regarded developers face when navigating shifting priorities within large corporations.

According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Bluepoint actively sought the green light for a “Bloodborne” remake starting in early 2025.

The project was a highly anticipated prospect for many fans, but FromSoftware, the original developers of the game, reportedly opposed the effort. Sony reportedly respected FromSoftware’s wishes, even though internal assessments suggested the remake would be financially viable.

This aligns with comments made last year by former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida, who suggested that FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki was too occupied with other projects to oversee a remake himself and “didn’t want anyone else to touch it.”

Bluepoint’s pursuit of the “Bloodborne” remake followed the cancellation of its primary project: a live-service game set within the “God of War” universe. The studio, renowned for its technical and artistic expertise in remasters, reportedly struggled with the transition to a different type of game development.

Sources at Bloomberg indicated the project was not a good fit for the team, and several employees expressed frustration with working on a game few were enthusiastic about creating.

After both the live-service project and the “Bloodborne” remake fell through, Bluepoint spent over a year seeking a new project, without success. The studio proposed a remaster of its own “Shadow of the Colossus” and a spin-off game in the “Ghost of Tsushima” series, but neither was approved.

Sony closed the studio earlier this month.
