Escalating tensions in the Middle East are raising concerns about regional stability, with calls for de-escalation and diplomatic solutions. The situation is particularly worrying given the presence of thousands of Bulgarian citizens in the region.
Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has condemned recent attacks by Iran, calling them a “dangerous escalation” that must cease immediately. “The events in the Middle East, where thousands of Bulgarians live, are causing great concern,” Borissov stated in a social media post. “The Iranian attacks on countries in the region and their citizens represent a dangerous escalation and must be stopped immediately.”
Borissov emphasized Bulgaria’s commitment to a balanced foreign policy and its reliance on diplomacy to resolve conflicts. He as well expressed doubts about global stability, citing Iran’s inability to prove it is not developing nuclear weapons as a violation of international agreements. According to reports from Eurocom, these concerns were voiced on February 28, 2026.
The comments follow a military operation involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which prompted retaliatory attacks from Iran targeting various sites in several Persian Gulf countries. As reported by 24 Chasa, Borissov’s position aligns with previous statements he has made regarding the region.
Meanwhile, other Bulgarian political figures are weighing in on the crisis. According to reports from news outlets, President Rumen Radev is advocating for a diplomatic approach to the conflict.
Delyan Peevski also commented on the situation, stating that the operation against Iran is changing the strategic environment and requires responsible, measured reactions. Nova.bg reported that GERB has also been critical of the current cabinet’s response to the conflict.
The unfolding situation highlights the fragility of peace in the Middle East and the potential for wider regional conflict.
