Talk display host Jeroen Pauw is receiving praise for the careful and insightful approach taken by his program, Pauw & De Wit, particularly in covering major news events. This comes despite ongoing criticism of the Dutch public broadcaster, NPO.
In a column published Sunday, March 1, 2026, critic Tina Nijkamp highlighted how the talk show demonstrated the importance of thorough analysis when breaking news unfolds. Nijkamp argued that the program offered more than just opinion, providing viewers with crucial background, context, and expert explanations to better understand current events. The program’s approach stands in contrast to the often-sensationalized nature of news coverage, especially online.
“There is enough to complain about regarding the NPO, but Jeroen Pauw proves its right to exist,” Nijkamp wrote. She emphasized the need for calm analysis and clear questioning during times of intense reporting, suggesting that such formats are vital in a media landscape increasingly fragmented by quick reactions and incomplete information.
The recognition for Pauw & De Wit arrives as discussions continue about the future of talk show formats in the Netherlands. Notably, there’s been recent speculation about a potential return for Pauw’s earlier program, 5 Years Later.
Nijkamp likewise expressed enthusiasm for a revival of 5 Jaar Later, a show where prominent figures are interviewed and revisited five years later. She suggested NPO 1, SBS 6, or RTL 4 consider bringing it back during the holiday season, believing it would resonate with audiences more than current offerings like De Geur van Succes. She described De Geur van Succes as “armzalige televisie” (pitiful television), criticizing its focus on wealth rather than genuine achievement.
According to Media Courant, Nijkamp believes 5 Jaar Later was “sympathieke televisie” (sympathetic television) and would be a welcome addition to the television schedule. She even suggested potential presenters for a reboot, including Tim de Wit, Humberto Tan, Wilfred Genee, and Hélène Hendriks. The original run of 5 Jaar Later ended in 2017 when then-NPO head Frans Klein cancelled the show despite strong viewership.
