A snowslide has closed a road in Sørfold, Norway, on Sunday, March 1, 2026, disrupting travel in the region. The closure underscores the ongoing challenges posed by winter weather in mountainous areas.
The incident occurred on County Road 7500 near Horndalsvatnet, specifically between Bonåsjøn and Sildhopen, according to early reports. Authorities say the slide isn’t believed to be large, and a wheel loader is en route to clear the roadway.
Siv Sørdal of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (VTS) told Avisa Nordland that cleanup efforts are underway. She indicated that there is a risk of further slides in multiple locations.
Meanwhile, a separate land slide near residential areas has been assessed by geologists. According to reports from March 31, 2025, the slide, approximately 50 meters wide and 7 meters high, occurred in Mørsvik. Geologist Harald Rostad from Indira stated that it was a surface slide that occurred down to a river.
Rostad confirmed that the riverbank had been previously reinforced by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) and that the protective measures remained intact. He added, “It is a typical surface slide that happens in the spring.”
Authorities have determined that no buildings were affected by the land slide and that the area is currently considered safe.
In a separate incident, two men died in a snow slide in Durmålstinden, Sørfold, on March 26, 2019. Both men were operating machinery at the time of the slide, according to Bent Are Eilertsen, a staff officer with the Nordland police district.
